Already the owners of 2 dogs and a flock of backyard chickens, we decided to get a pet pig. After adopting Eleanor we fell in love with the intelligence, willfulness and curiosity of pigs. As we began to learn more about pigs and pig behaviour we were shocked to learn how few people keep their pigs (only 2-5% of owners that buy a pig keep it). After that we began reaching out to other pig owners to provide help and education.
We quickly realized the lack of factual information available to pig parents is a huge problem and learned that many breeders will lie to sell more pigs. Breeders will often mislead prospective pig owners about the size a pig will get, the amount of care a pig requires and pig behavior in general (they are absolutely NOT like having a dog). This lack of realistic expectations leads to situations in which pigs need to be re-homed, often quickly and haphazardly. Rehoming is stressful and scary to pigs and it can be difficult to find them a proper, safe environment to go. That's what we want to change. At CTPR we hope to provide education to potential pig parents and support to pig owners to help break the cycle. We also provide foster services to pigs in need and rehabilitation to mistreated or improperly cared for pet pigs.
We love our pigs but know them to be demanding pets that are not suitable for every family. Pigs can make a wonderful addition to the right environment and we are here to help you decide if they are the right pet for you.
